DM Courtyard

Florida International University Student Lounge

This unique space in a 1970’s concrete building at the heart of the FIU campus features three 36 FT tall stainless steel meshes. Each of these bell-shaped meshes hosts more than 1,000 Tillandsias, creating an extraordinary hanging garden.

Two circular benches, were custom made to allow for multiple forms of seating and student engagement. The courtyard floor is lined with blue glass aggregate that is set on an ADA accesible matrix that stands out noticeably from its context. The surrounding parapets are furnished with vine training systems that will create a green wall that surrounds the courtyard over time.
